Future Concerts IN The 2018-2019 Season

Doug Cameron

Saturday, September 8, 2018 - 7:30 PM

Doug Cameron is a high-voltage violinist and a master of many musical styles.  He has appeared worldwide with major symphonies, as a soloist and with his own dynamic band.  Growing up in New York, Cameron started on the violin when he was five. He developed quickly and was still in grammar school when he played in the Westchester Conservatory Orchestra and the New York State Youth Orchestra. He mostly studied classical music up to high school (including leading a group called the Baroque Bums), then became interested in improvising and was particularly fond of the recordings of the Allman Brothers. Attending the University of Buffalo, Cameron often played in local clubs. One day Gregg Allman sat in and he was so impressed by Cameron that the violinist joined him for a tour and a recording. Graduating from college in 1978, Cameron settled in Los Angeles. Since then he has worked in the studios and with such musicians as David Benoit, George BensonEarth, Wind & FireDoc Severinson's fusion band Xebron, Jose Feliciano and many others. As a leader, Doug Cameron has emphasized instrumental pop in his music, recording sets for Spindletop (starting in 1986), Narada Equinox and Higher Octave.

For our show Doug is featuring his son Alex, a violinist extraordinaire at the ripe-old age of 15!  Doug also works with local Suzuki students and will feature some of these talented kids during the show, making this a really special night.

Virtuosic showpieces, romantic tenor arias, pyrotechnical solos, blazing gypsy show pieces, multi-instrument mastery and a World Accordion Champion – this is Quartetto Gelato. For nearly two decades, this dazzling ensemble has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide with their exotic blend of musical virtuosity, artistic passion and humor. Classical in training – eclectic by design – Quartetto Gelato (QG) not only thrills its audiences with its multi-instrument mastery, but also offers the bonus of a brilliant operatic tenor. With a performance repertoire that spans the globe including classical masterworks, operatic arias, the sizzling energy of tangos, gypsy and folk songs, the group's theatrical stage presence and relaxed humor establishes an intimate rapport with audiences worldwide. QG established themselves as dominant forces on the music scene early in their career by winning the coveted title of NPR Performance Today's Debut Artist of the Year. The selection panel concluding the quartet was "an amazing ensemble that achieves the nearly impossible: they play salon music with real style and classical music with real precision; Great chops and a commitment in all that they play." In 2007, the group's first DVD Quartetto Gelato: A Concert in Wine Country! was picked up by PBS throughout the U.S. for broadcast. Most recently, QG won the honor of Best Classical Ensemble at Canada's 2010 INDIE awards. QG is regularly heard on CBC, Classical 96.3 FM, NPR, PRI, and NUR networks. Their Concert in Wine Country DVD is seen regularly on PBS. Their eight CDs have sold over 150,000 units to date and they have been featured on the Hollywood soundtrack "OnlyYou." Always active in the recording studio, the quartet recorded its eighth CD in 2010 – "The Magic of Christmas" featuring Christmas favorites with a twist of Gelato. Two of their CDs have literally been heard around the world, since they accompanied Canadian astronaut, Dr. Robert Thirsk, during his NASA flight on board the space shuttle Columbia.

Five Sax

Saturday, Feburary 9, 2019 - 7:30 PM

Five Sax is a modern-style saxophone quintet featuring five musicians from around the world. The individual members are all established solo musicians who represent a significant international presence and hold many prizes from important national and international competitions. They converged in Vienna from all around the world, united by a modern conception of virtuosity and the constant urge to push the limits of performance.

The ensemble began in an unusual way: performing street theater in the center of Vienna. Their first year performing together was an unforgettable experience of running from the police, surviving freezing temperatures and dealing with angry shopkeepers. Their "starving artist" past is echoed in their concerts by their use of theatrical elements, their strong connection with the audience, and their spontaneous approach to making music.

The five musicians hail from Poland, Italy, Belgium, the USA and Chile, and each brings his own unique and vibrant personality to the group. The ensemble's imaginative programming mirrors the diversity of its members; rooted in classical music, while venturing into American jazz, south-American Latin styles and European folk music. Five Sax has performed in some of the most prestigious halls such as the Konzerthaus (Vienna), the Teatro del Lago (Chile), the National Concert Hall (Taipei) and the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam).
